The Best Car Paint Sealant On The Market
If you are looking for a really good car paint sealant, then in my opinion the Meguiar’s M21 Mirror Glaze Synthetic Sealant is the one to go for. There are other good choices from the Chemical Guys and Wolfgang, but when I tested them out, I opted for Meguiars, as I thought it did the best job of the three.
The sealants from Meguiars and Chemical Guys are both around the same price point of about $16-18 but I found the Wolfgang one pretty expensive at between $40-50, depending on where you buy it.
What Does A Car Paint Sealant Actually Do?
As you can imagine a sealant seals with the purpose of offering protection from the elements. They help bond the paint on your car and with one application, you should get around 3-6 months protection. Now most of us will use something like a Carnauba wax, and that does a similar job. However a wax will only give you about 3-6 weeks protection, depending on road conditions and the weather where you are driving your car. Sealants also really sharpen up the shine and the overall look of your car.
Using Layers of Sealant
The more layers of sealant you do, the more protection the paint will get. The best advice is to leave it at least one day before applying a second sealant, as it takes around 24 hours for the first layer of sealant to cure. Some car detailers will disagree with this and many of them will apply a second coat after an hour or so. The truth is that it depends on a whole range of issues, such as the weather, and the type of sealant. For best results, waiting 24 hours is the right thing to do.
What Is The Difference Between A Car Sealant and a Car Wax
One of the blokes from the Chemical Guys explains the key differences in the video below.
As you can see, they both do a similar job, but each does a slightly different job.
When and How Often Should You Apply A Car Sealant
The video below explains how and when you should apply a car sealant. There is some useful advice in this video, so take just under a minute, and have a quick listen. For most people though a car sealant should be applied about twice a year. If the car is new, then you would only need to do this when you get the car, and then apply again once every year.
However, if you live in an area that has high pollution, or severe weather, then apply the sealant about 3-4 times every year.
How To Apply A Car Sealant
Remember this one golden rule, and when it comes to any car sealant, then less is more. All sealants use synthetic polymers which simply means a higher level of protection for your car. You can either apply a sealant by hand, or by using a machine.
Begin by washing your car. Take the time and effort at this stage to make sure it is a thorough wash. Once that is done then you can clay bar the car. Now This is an optional step, but one that I would recommend. you will notice that the guy in the video uses only four little dots of sealant, and personally I use only 2. The bottom line is that you need very little.
Using a soft pad apply the sealant and allow it to dry out, which takes about 15-20 minutes. With a soft cloth or microfiber towel then simply buff it off and you are done. It is a simple enough task to do, and even by hand, you can easily finish a car in about 45 minutes. When you have it done, then you have protection against:
- UV Rays from the sun
- Harsh weather
- The grime from the roads
- The dreaded bugs and sap
Then depending on the environment where you live you will have a minimum of 4-6 months protection, and up to a year in areas where there is no harsh weather.

With this one you get 8 ounces of sealant which is more than enough. For me out of the three that I tested, this one goes on the easiest and comes off real easy too.
When I did my first car with this, I got called away on an urgent phone call. I didn’t get back to the car for almost a full hour. This sealant was still easy to take off, even after that length of time. I mentioned earlier about cure time once the sealant has been put on and buffed off. Most of them out there do need the full 24 hours, and during that time you are supposed to not touch the car, and keep it out of the bad weather.
With this one, I found it to be fine after just a few hours. So if you are pushed for time, then this would be a good choice for you. People who have bought this product and reviewed it over at Amazon, have given it an average rating of 4.8 out of 5, and that in itself speaks volumes about its quality.
